In short

The Abbey Yung Method is an 11-step wash-day routine built on three essentials: shampoo as often as your scalp needs, conditioner at every wash, then a leave-in and a heat protectant before the hairdryer or straightener. The other steps are added depending on your hair: a bond repair treatment or oil before washing, a weekly clarifying shampoo, a post-wash treatment, styling, finishing and between-wash care. It suits damaged, coloured or dry hair best; in Morocco, where tap water is often hard, the weekly clarifying shampoo earns its place.

Updated on 17 October 2026

Abbey Yung popularised a way of organising wash day into 11 steps. It is not a protocol to follow in full, but an ordered list from which everyone keeps what their hair needs. The core idea: look after damaged lengths before washing, wash the scalp whenever it needs it, never skip conditioner and never heat unprotected hair.

Below is our adaptation with well-known hair care brands sold on FromGermany.ma. The core is GUHL's Reconstruction profonde (Deep Repair) duo, which the brand designs for damaged hair and says it makes in Germany, plus the Schwarzkopf GLISS Express-Repair spray, a leave-in and heat protectant in one. The pre- and post-wash bond repair treatments come from Elvital's Bond Repair range (L'Oréal Paris), and almost every step keeps a small-budget option. Abbey Yung is not affiliated with FromGermany.ma and did not choose these products. Each step explains its function; each product page carries the maker's information.

In Morocco, two details matter. Tap water is often hard and leaves deposits on hair that a clarifying shampoo helps remove. And hairdryers and straighteners, widely used, make heat protection a must. Delivery across Morocco in 18 to 20 days, cash on delivery.

The pre-shampoo treatment from the Bond Repair range, which L'Oréal designs for damaged, breakage-prone hair. According to the maker: massage generously into damp hair, leave for 5 minutes, rinse, then shampoo and condition. Small budget: Balea PROFESSIONAL's Plex Care 2-in-1 mask, which the maker also intends for pre-wash use (on towel-dried hair, at least 10 minutes); it is not sold as a bond repair treatment.

What is the Abbey Yung Method?

It is the wash-day routine shared by Abbey Yung, a US content creator specialising in hair and scalp care who describes herself as a certified trichologist. It does not depend on any brand: each step is a function (cleanse, condition, protect…) that you fill with the products of your choice.

It has 11 steps, numbered the same way by IPSY, Pedestrian and Grazia, which describe it in detail. Several are optional, and the order matters more than the count: look after the lengths before washing, condition after every shampoo, protect before styling.

  • 1. Pre-shampoo bond repair treatment (optional, 1–2 times a week)
  • 2. Pre-shampoo oil (optional, for dry or tangle-prone hair)
  • 3. Clarifying shampoo (about once a week)
  • 4. Regular shampoo (as often as needed)
  • 5. In-shower bond repair treatment (about once a week)
  • 6. Conditioner, mask or gloss (every wash)
  • 7. Post-wash bond repair treatment (optional)
  • 8. Leave-in and heat protection (every wash)
  • 9. Styling (optional)
  • 10. Finishing: serum, cream or oil (optional)
  • 11. Between-wash care: dry shampoo, overnight treatment, heat protectant before hot tools

The 3 essential steps

If you keep only three steps, these are the ones: Abbey Yung presents them as the simplest version of her method. Everything else comes on top, depending on your hair.

In our adaptation, these three steps match GUHL's Reconstruction profonde shampoo and conditioner, then the Schwarzkopf GLISS Express-Repair Total Repair spray, which works as both leave-in and heat protectant: the three products marked 'essential'. For a tighter budget, each has a small-budget equivalent (Balea PROFESSIONAL Plex Care, Balea's 2-in-1 spray).

  • Wash your scalp as often as it needs, every other day or twice a week depending on the person. Abbey Yung rejects the idea of 'training' your hair to be washed less often.
  • Use conditioner at every wash, from mid-lengths to ends: for her, it is never optional. A mask can replace it.
  • Protect after washing: a leave-in to detangle, and a heat protectant before the hairdryer, straightener or curling iron.

The Abbey Yung Method for fine hair

The sources we consulted give no 'fine hair' version of the method: Abbey Yung stresses instead that it adapts to every hair type. Here is how we lighten it for fine hair, which gets oily faster and falls flat under rich treatments.

  • Wash as often as needed: that is exactly what the method allows.
  • Swap the Reconstruction profonde duo for GUHL's silicone-free Force & Densité shampoo and conditioner, which the maker designs for fine hair: they are offered as alternatives in steps 4 and 6.
  • Keep conditioner on mid-lengths and ends, away from the roots.
  • Choose a spray leave-in over a cream (the step 8 GLISS spray is one), sprayed away from the roots, and keep pre-shampoo oil to the ends.
  • Space out bond repair treatments (steps 1, 5 and 7): once a week is usually enough, except on bleached hair. For the step 7 serum, two drops on the ends are enough.
  • For styling, GUHL's long-lasting volume blow-dry spray, applied before the hairdryer, rather than a cream.

The Abbey Yung Method for curly hair

The Abbey Yung Method was not designed for curls, and it parts ways with the Curly Girl Method on one point: Abbey Yung rules out neither sulfates nor silicones, and pushes back on claims that they are harmful. A curly hair routine can still follow the same logic, with a few adjustments.

For a routine designed for curls from the start, see our curly hair routine.

  • Keep the clarifying shampoo, but every one to two weeks if your curls are dry.
  • For regular washes, a shampoo and conditioner made for curls: our curly hair routine offers several.
  • For finishing, IPSY notes that creams and lotions often suit curly hair best: BALI CURLS' Hydrating Curl Cream (step 9) goes on while hair is still damp.
  • If you dry with a diffuser, Balea's silicone-free 2-in-1 heat protection spray, made for curls, can replace the step 8 GLISS spray.

Hard water in Morocco: why clarifying shampoo matters

Hard water is rich in calcium and magnesium. At every wash, some of these minerals settle on the hair, along with styling residue and sebum, and a regular shampoo doesn't remove them all. A common sign: dull, rough hair that snags despite conditioner.

That is the job of step 3. Abbey Yung plans a clarifying shampoo about once a week; in Morocco, where tap water is often hard, it is the optional step we recommend first. We offer two silicone-free shampoos: Schwarzkopf GLISS's scalp balance deep-cleansing shampoo, which the maker designs mainly for oily scalps, and, as the small-budget option, Swiss-o-Par's deep-cleansing shampoo, the only one of the two that its maker credits with an anti-limescale effect.

  • Once a week in general; every two weeks on very dry, coloured or curly hair.
  • Always followed by conditioner: a clarifier cleans deeply, and the lengths need conditioning right after.
  • After repeated swims in the pool or weeks of styling products, it is the right time for it.

Our verdict

The method has a real strength: it brings order to wash day and restates two rules many people neglect, conditioner at every wash and protection before heat. It is also flexible: the three basic steps are enough for a lot of hair.

Its limit is the full version: eleven steps take time and money, and too many rich treatments can weigh fine hair down. Start with the core, then add one step at a time while watching how your hair responds. It is a care routine, not a treatment: if your hair is shedding a lot or your scalp is irritated, see a dermatologist first.

Transparency: Abbey Yung works with brands, including Pantene, which announced a first product co-created with her in late September 2026. The products on this page are our own selection from what we sell: they are not hers, and she did not choose them. To avoid any confusion, we have not included any Pantene product.

Frequently asked questions

How many steps are in the Abbey Yung Method?

11 steps, from pre-shampoo preparation to between-wash care. Several are optional: Abbey Yung also presents a minimal three-step version (shampoo, conditioner, protection).

In what order do you do the Abbey Yung Method?

Before washing: bond repair treatment or oil. In the shower: clarifying shampoo (once a week), shampoo, bond repair treatment, then conditioner or mask. After: leave-in, heat protectant, styling and finishing. Between washes: dry shampoo or an overnight treatment.

Do I have to do every step?

No. The method is a flexible framework: the core is three steps (shampoo as your scalp needs, conditioner at every wash, protection before heat). The other steps are added one at a time, depending on your hair.

Does the Abbey Yung Method work for fine or curly hair?

Yes, with adjustments. Fine hair: GUHL's Force & Densité shampoo and conditioner, a spray leave-in, a volume blow-dry spray rather than a cream, bond repair treatments spaced out. Curly hair: a shampoo and conditioner made for curls, clarifying every one to two weeks, BALI CURLS cream to finish and Balea's 2-in-1 curl spray with a diffuser. Unlike the Curly Girl Method, it does not rule out sulfates or silicones.

How often should I wash my hair with this method?

As often as your scalp needs, without trying to space out washes. Typical schedule: every wash, shampoo, conditioner, leave-in and protection; once a week, clarifying shampoo and a bond repair treatment; once or twice a week if needed, a pre-shampoo treatment.

How do I care for my hair between washes?

Dry shampoo on the roots if they get oily, a few drops of oil or serum on dry ends, heat protectant before every hot tool, and an overnight treatment if the lengths tangle. Dry shampoo refreshes, but does not replace a real wash.

Which clarifying shampoo should I use with hard water?

A silicone-free clarifying (deep-cleansing) shampoo, usually once a week. We offer two: Schwarzkopf GLISS scalp balance, designed mainly for oily scalps, and the cheaper Swiss-o-Par, which its maker presents with an anti-limescale effect. Always follow it with conditioner.

How much does the Abbey Yung Method cost in Morocco?

It depends on the steps you choose. The total for the three essential products and for the full routine is shown live on this page, in dirhams. The small-budget alternatives, often from Balea PROFESSIONAL, bring the bill down noticeably. Cash on delivery, delivered across Morocco in 18 to 20 days.
